GARDENING
Even in the digital age, gardening books offer some of the best information for pollinator gardeners. These books are generally written by naturalists or ecologists so the information is more accurate than many sources online. Also, the physical format makes flipping through identification sections easy, especially in the field. When choosing a new pollinator gardening book, check the publication date. New research brings revised approaches to the field often. For instance, a few older books mention the harmful Japanese Knotweed as an excellent nectar source for honey bees! As you know, Japanese Knotweed is now invading natural habitats and outcompeting the native plants needed for our pollinators’ survival. Even with the list of books below, take a critical look at the information written and cross check plants with a reliable database like Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center Plant Database or the USDA PLANTS Database.
